You Are The Love of My Life

How does it feel to know that the creator of the universe feels this way about you? This knowledge really puts into perspective why idols are such a big problem for God. No one likes the feeling of not having their love returned, rejection, and being undervalued. I’ve been learning more and more about idols recently and thought I’d share it with you.

1 Kings 14: 8-9 (NLT) shows how much God values obedience and serving him alone with all of our hearts.

It says “I ripped the kingdom away from the family of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart and always did whatever I wanted. You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made other gods for yourself and have made me furious with your gold calves.”

If anyone knows the feeling of betrayal, hurt, and disappointment, it is God. God was gracious to Jeroboam and blessed him by raising him up to be a king. However, Jeroboam turned his back on God by building golden calves to worship instead. Now of course we don’t worship golden calves :P but it got me thinking about other things that could be our idols in this day and age. For example relationships, fashion/looks, celebrities, marriage, societal trends, school, work, and even ourselves can be our idols. Things fade, and people go and come but God is forever for you.

Application: How to spot an idol?

Idols are what consume you instead of you being consumed by God. Ask yourself what do I spend most of my time pursuing?

Other Questions you can ask:
Are You Willing To Compromise Your Beliefs For It? Does It Push You Closer To God or Pull You Farther Away? Will You Get Angry If You Can’t Do It/Don’t Get It?
